*Not because they want to speculate at work. Because a third of them are already buying it on their own, and the savings tools their employer offers have not changed in thirty years.*

Block Rewards Research · blockrewards.com · 9 min read

| **30%** of Americans own cryptocurrency of some kind (Security.org, 2026) | **62%** say their income has not kept pace with inflation (Bankrate, 2025) | **59%** report active financial stress right now (PwC) |

**Scope: United States** The Bitcoin Savings Plan is available to Canadian employers today. Block Rewards launches in the United States in Q1 2027 through a licensed US partner.

**Start With What Employees Are Not Asking For**

No employee has ever walked into an HR office and asked to be paid in bitcoin. The handful who want that already work somewhere that does it, or they work for themselves.

What a much larger group is asking, in exit interviews and engagement surveys and the conversations that never make it into either, is a blunter question: **why does saving not work anymore?**

They are contributing to the 401(k). They are told to build an emergency fund. They are doing roughly what they were told to do, and the gap between their savings and the things they are saving for keeps widening. Bankrate’s 2025 Jobs and Pay Report found **62% of workers say their income has not kept pace with inflation**, the highest share in four years. PwC’s research puts **59% in active financial stress** right now.

That is the demand signal. Bitcoin is not the request. It is the answer a significant minority of your workforce has already picked, without asking.

**The Number That Should Change the Conversation**

Roughly **30% of American adults own cryptocurrency of some kind**, and that share has held near 30% for three straight years, according to Security.org’s 2026 adoption report. Bitcoin is the most widely held of those assets. This is no longer an early-adopter statistic. It is a feature of the American workforce.

Sit with the implication for a benefits package. In a hundred-person company, something close to thirty people are already buying this asset. They are doing it:

- after payday, with money they had to remember to move
- irregularly, because manual saving is always irregular
- through consumer apps, at retail spreads
- with no transaction records worth anything at tax time
- and with no idea that their employer could make any of it easier

Your benefits package is silent on a financial behavior that roughly a third of your people are engaged in. Few other categories work that way. You would not ignore a third of the workforce buying supplemental insurance on their own.

**The honest version of the pitch** An employer offering this is not introducing a behavior. It is noticing one, and deciding whether to bring it inside a structure with automatic contributions, institutional custody, clean records, and a disclosure that tells the truth about volatility.
---

**Why the Benefits Package Stopped Keeping Up**

Here is the uncomfortable part for our industry.

The architecture of American workplace savings was built for a different relationship between wages and assets. The premise was that a worker earning a steady wage, contributing steadily, would accumulate enough to buy the things a life needs: a house, an education, a retirement.

For a meaningful share of workers that premise has weakened. Wages have risen. The assets those wages are measured against, particularly housing, have in many markets risen faster. The result is an employee who is doing everything correctly and falling behind anyway, which is a specific and corrosive kind of stress. It is not the stress of mismanagement. It is the stress of playing properly and losing.

A financial literacy workshop cannot address that. It teaches better management of an amount that is not the problem. This is why employers keep adding wellness programs and keep seeing the same engagement scores.

The useful question is not how to teach employees to budget. It is what an employer can offer that has a chance of growing faster than the things employees are trying to buy. Reasonable people disagree about whether bitcoin is a good answer to that question. Many of your employees have already decided it is at least worth trying.

**What the Generational Data Does and Does Not Say**

You will see a lot of statistics in this category claiming that some large majority of Gen Z wants crypto compensation. Treat those carefully. Most come from vendor surveys with small samples and leading questions, and the spread between them is enormous. Ownership figures by generation vary by twenty points or more depending on who ran the study and how they defined the age bands.

The defensible claim is narrower and still strong: **ownership is concentrated in the working-age cohorts employers are competing hardest to hire**, and the overall rate has been stable rather than faddish. Stability over three years is the more interesting fact. It suggests a settled behavior rather than a bubble-driven spike.

If you are building a business case, build it on the ownership rate and the financial stress data. Those hold up in a room full of skeptics. The enthusiasm surveys do not.

**What Employers Get Out of It**

The return on a savings benefit is a retention return, not an investment return. It is worth being precise about that, because the alternative framing invites a conversation nobody in HR wants to have about price predictions.

**Differentiation where it is scarce.** Benefits packages in most industries are close to identical. Health, dental, a retirement plan, some PTO policy. A candidate choosing between two offers rarely sees anything in the benefits column that decides it. A savings benefit nobody else offers is one of the few remaining places to be genuinely different for a cost measured in single-digit dollars per employee per month.

**A signal that you noticed.** Employees read benefits as evidence of what an employer understands about their lives. A package assembled in 1995 says something. A package that acknowledges how a third of your workforce is actually trying to build wealth says something else.

**Retention economics that are hard to argue with.** SHRM puts the cost of replacing an employee at 50% to 200% of annual salary. The arithmetic on a benefit priced per employee per month does not require optimism to work.

**The Case Against, Stated Fairly**

A post like this should include the objections rather than wait for them.

Bitcoin is volatile, and the historical drawdowns have been severe enough to wipe out years of gains. Some employees will contribute, watch the balance fall, and feel worse rather than better. That is not a hypothetical risk, and an employer offering this should decide in advance that it is acceptable and disclose it plainly at enrollment.

It is also not insured, not a retirement plan, and not a substitute for an emergency fund or an employer match. Any employer offering it should say so in the enrollment materials, in the same font as everything else.

And it is not for every workforce. If your people are not asking, if participation in the retirement plan you already offer is low, or if your workforce is concentrated near minimum wage, there are better uses of your attention and your budget.

**The test we would apply** Does this answer a question your employees are actually asking? If you do not know, ask them before you buy anything. The answer is more useful than any survey we could cite.
---

**The Takeaway**

The headline on this piece overstates it slightly, and it is worth correcting here rather than leaving it to stand.

American workers are not asking for bitcoin. They are asking for savings that keep up with the life they are trying to buy, and roughly a third of them have independently landed on this asset as part of the answer. The question in front of employers is not whether to endorse that choice. It is whether to keep pretending it is not happening.
