Bitcoin Savings Plan

# A savings benefit your employees own.

The Bitcoin Savings Plan lets your people set aside part of every paycheque automatically, after tax, into bitcoin held in their own name. Voluntary, employee funded, matchable if you want it to be, and liquid from the first day. Your company never holds bitcoin.

1 to 2 days

to launch, on the payroll you already run

Employee paid

Contributions come from the employee's own after-tax pay

No minimum

No headcount minimum, no setup fee, no lock-in

In one paragraph

The Bitcoin Savings Plan is a voluntary, payroll-deducted savings benefit for the medium term. Employee-funded, employer-matchable, and liquid throughout. An employee chooses an amount, that amount comes off their pay after tax like any other deduction, and it buys bitcoin held in an account in their own name with a regulated custodian. The employer runs payroll in dollars and never touches bitcoin. Block Rewards handles enrolment, identity verification, anti-money-laundering monitoring, custody and the year-end records.

## Your benefits stack has a gap in the middle.

Most benefits give employees two places to put money. An emergency fund covers the next few weeks. A retirement plan covers the next few decades, capped and restricted, priced for a date thirty years out.

Between them sits the horizon people actually plan around: a down payment, a business, a sabbatical, a career change, a year with less income than expected. Roughly three to ten years. It has to stay liquid, it does not fit inside a registered or qualified plan, and most benefits stacks have nothing in it. **That gap is what BSP fills.**

What you get

- A voluntary savings benefit that runs on your existing payroll, with one deduction line
- Enrolment, identity verification and anti-money-laundering monitoring handled by us
- Employee education, so your HR team never has to explain bitcoin
- An optional employer match, using the same mechanics as your RRSP or 401(k) match
- Custody with a regulated institution, in each employee's own name
- Transaction records and year-end reporting in both markets

## How it works

1. Set it up

Sign the services agreement and tell us your pay cycle. Decide whether you are offering a match. Launch takes one to two business days and no change to your payroll software.
2. Employees opt in

Your people enrol themselves, verify their identity and choose a dollar amount or a percentage. They can change, pause or stop it whenever they like.
3. Payday runs as usual

Wages are paid in dollars. The contribution comes off after tax as a deduction, and once the funds settle it buys bitcoin.
4. The employee owns it

The bitcoin sits in an account in their name. They can sell it, withdraw it to a personal wallet, or keep it when they leave you.

## Why employers add it

The business case does not rest on the asset. It rests on the fact that the people you want to keep are already buying it, with no structure around it and nobody to ask about it.

It speaks to the talent you struggle to keep

Younger technical workers are already buying bitcoin on their phones, at whatever the price is that day. Offering structure for something they do anyway is a sharper recruiting signal than another wellness portal.

Breadth is what employees notice

Mercer's survey of 17,000 employees found those with ten or more benefits were far more likely to say their benefits keep them from leaving than those with one to four. A smaller employer climbs a steeper part of that curve.

No exposure for the company

The purchase happens after payroll, with the employee's own money. You hold no bitcoin, take no treasury position, and carry no responsibility for investment outcomes.

Structure beats willpower

Payroll deduction is why the 401(k) and the group RRSP work. Money that never lands in a chequing account does not get redirected. BSP applies that mechanism to an asset your people already want.

Saving for the future has no deadline, and this month's bills do. Payroll deduction is how an employer gives the future a due date.

## How we are different

Putting bitcoin in front of your workforce raises questions no other voluntary benefit raises. The sharpest one usually comes from the person who already understands the asset: why not just add a bitcoin ETF to the group RRSP or the 401(k) menu and be done with it?

Start with the honest half of the answer. A fund held inside a registered or qualified plan grows tax-sheltered, and BSP does not. We concede that straight away. What the registered route cannot do is reach the asset. In Canada, spot bitcoin is not a qualified investment, so a registered plan can only ever hold units of a fund that holds it. In the United States, putting a digital asset on the plan menu turns it into an ERISA fiduciary selection, and the Department of Labor has told plan fiduciaries to exercise extreme care. **Either way your employee ends up owning a claim on a fund: nothing to move to a wallet, nothing that travels with them, and nothing they hold outright.**

The plan is also only half of what you are buying. The rest is how we support it, which is where most of this category stops short.

Live education, every year

Every new client gets a live member education webinar at launch, and we come back for an annual member meeting, the same cadence your group retirement provider keeps. Your employees ask us the hard questions, so your HR team never has to answer them.

Benefits expertise, not crypto sales

The consultative process starts with your total rewards strategy rather than the asset: what you already offer, where the gaps sit, whether a match makes sense for your budget, and how this gets communicated alongside everything else in your plan.

Actual bitcoin, which is the whole point

We built this because we believe people should be able to save in bitcoin itself, owned outright and portable, rather than in a wrapper that holds it for them. Offered as an employee benefit, this is the only way to do that.

## What it is not

Not this

An option inside your retirement plan

What it is

BSP sits outside your retirement plan entirely. Nothing goes on the plan menu, your plan documents do not change, and your plan governance is untouched.

Not this

Paying wages in bitcoin

What it is

Wages are still paid in dollars. The deduction runs after payroll from net pay, which keeps BSP clear of wage-payment rules in both countries.

Not this

A company treasury position

What it is

The money and the asset belong to the employee throughout. Nothing reaches your balance sheet. If your company wants to hold bitcoin itself, that is a separate product.

Not this

A trading product

What it is

A fixed amount every pay cycle is dollar cost averaging by construction. There is nothing to time, nothing to trade and no advice given to your staff.

## Compliance and administration

Participation is voluntary, employee-directed and employee-funded, and you carry no liability for investment outcomes. We handle identity verification, anti-money-laundering monitoring, conversion records and year-end reporting in both markets.

Canada

- Registered with FINTRAC as a money services business (M23626957)
- Source deductions and T4 reporting included
- Custody with Balance, Canada's longest-standing digital asset custodian
- Outside registered plans, so RRSP and TFSA qualified-investment rules never arise

United States

- FinCEN registration and state money transmission
- IRS Form 1099-DA reporting
- Custody with BitGo Bank and Trust, an OCC-chartered trust bank
- Outside ERISA, because BSP is never inside the plan

Employees can withdraw to self-custody in either market. Their bitcoin is theirs from the first purchase, with no vesting, no clawback and nothing forfeited when they leave.

## What it costs

$9.99per participating employee, per month

Billed only for employees who actually enrol. CAD in Canada, USD in the United States.

2%of contributions

No setup fee, no minimum headcount and no minimum term. An employer match, if you offer one, is your own budget decision.

**Thinking about the company holding bitcoin too?** That is a different decision with a different risk profile, and it belongs to your board rather than your benefits plan. See [Corporate Treasury](https://blockrewards.ca/corporate-treasury?hsLang=en). You can offer BSP without ever going near it.

Where this stops

### Read this before you book a call

BSP puts a volatile asset in front of your employees. We would rather you hear the limits from us than find them later.

The price can fall by half

Bitcoin has fallen by more than half in past cycles, and employee balances fall with it. Our employee materials say so plainly and recommend starting small. The answer is sizing, not reassurance.

It is not a retirement plan

No tax deferral, no contribution room, no lifetime income. It supplements your retirement plan and never replaces it, and an emergency fund should come before both.

It is not for everyone on your payroll

Payroll-deducted savings benefits in this category report adoption around 40 percent at best. Plan for a committed minority rather than a majority, and judge the benefit on that basis.

A match is taxable compensation

If you match, that amount is employment income to the employee, reported on a T4 in Canada or as wages in the United States. There is no tax advantage in either country and we will never imply one.

No same-day sell provision

Many share purchase plans let employees sell immediately to remove their own risk, which also removes the ownership. BSP has no equivalent. That is a real difference and a real risk.

## Take 20 minutes with us

We will walk through what launch looks like on your payroll, what your HR team has to do, and what to tell employees. No commitment, and no advice to anyone about buying bitcoin.

## Frequently asked questions

What does the Bitcoin Savings Plan cost an employer?

$9.99 per participating employee per month, plus 2 percent of contributions, in Canadian dollars in Canada and US dollars in the United States. You are billed only for employees who enrol. There is no setup fee, no minimum headcount and no minimum term. An employer match, if you choose to offer one, is a separate budget decision that belongs to you.

Does our company ever hold bitcoin?

No. Payroll runs in dollars and the purchase happens after payroll, with the employee's own after-tax money. The bitcoin is held in the employee's name with the custodian. Your company takes no treasury position and carries nothing on its balance sheet.

What does our payroll team actually have to do?

Add one after-tax deduction line and send us the contribution file each pay cycle. There is no change to your payroll software and no minimum headcount. Most employers launch in one to two business days.

Do we have to offer a match?

No. BSP works as an employee-pay-all benefit with no employer cost beyond the subscription. A match is the strongest lever on participation if you want one, and it uses the same mechanics as your RRSP or 401(k) match. Any match is taxable employment income to the employee, reported on a T4 in Canada or as wages in the United States.

What happens when an employee leaves?

They keep everything. The account is in their name, nothing vests and nothing is forfeited. Payroll contributions simply stop and your involvement ends there.

Who holds the bitcoin?

Balance, Canada's longest-standing digital asset custodian, in Canada. BitGo Bank and Trust, an OCC-chartered trust bank, in the United States. In both markets the account is in the employee's name and they can withdraw to a personal wallet at any time.

Is this legal and compliant?

Yes. Block Rewards is registered with FINTRAC as a money services business (M23626957) in Canada, with FinCEN registration and state money transmission in the United States. We run identity verification and anti-money-laundering monitoring on every account, and supply source deduction records, T4 inputs and IRS Form 1099-DA reporting. Because BSP sits outside your retirement plan, adding it is never a fiduciary selection under ERISA.

How many employees will actually enrol?

Plan for a committed minority. Payroll-deducted savings benefits in this category report adoption around 40 percent at best, and a match moves that number more than any other lever. We would rather set that expectation now than oversell participation.

Why not offer a bitcoin ETF in our group RRSP or 401(k) instead?

Concede the tax point first: a fund held inside a registered or qualified plan grows tax-sheltered and BSP does not. What that route cannot do is reach the asset. In Canada, spot bitcoin is not a qualified investment, so a registered plan can only hold units of a fund that holds it. In the United States, adding a digital asset to the plan menu is an ERISA fiduciary selection, and the Department of Labor has told plan fiduciaries to exercise extreme care. Fund units cannot be withdrawn to a wallet and do not travel with the employee. BSP gives them the asset itself, in their own name, with no effect on your plan or its governance.

How does this compare to an employee just buying bitcoin themselves?

It produces no better price and no tax benefit. What it produces is a higher completion rate on a decision the employee already wanted to make, which is the same reason every payroll savings instrument works, from the 401(k) to an employee share purchase plan. If you match, it also produces money the employee would otherwise leave on the table.

General information only, not tax, legal, accounting or investment advice. Bitcoin's price is volatile and employees can lose money. Bitcoin held in custody is not a bank deposit and is not covered by CDIC in Canada or FDIC in the United States. Block Rewards is registered with FINTRAC as a money services business (M23626957). Participation is voluntary and funded by the employee from after-tax pay. Any employer match is taxable employment income. Pricing is set out in the services agreement.
